Lighter Complete Guide: Zero-Fee Accounts, ZK Architecture, and Funding
Lighter is a decentralized trading platform built around verifiable matching and low-latency execution. It should no longer be summarized as a lightweight order book on Arbitrum. A useful review now starts with Lighter Core, Ethereum anchoring, account type, order latency, and funding.
Perpetual futures amplify losses. Zero trading fees do not mean zero cost or zero risk. Verify all current parameters in the official interface before trading.
Understand the technical boundary first
Lighter describes Lighter Core as an exchange system that uses succinct execution proofs and anchors proofs and system state to Ethereum. Smart contracts hold deposited assets and the canonical state root. A sequencer orders transactions and provides soft finality, while verified proofs update state on Ethereum.
Two practical conclusions follow:
- Lighter is not simply an Arbitrum frontend, so the old chain label is no longer an adequate description.
- Verifiable execution does not remove sequencer, smart-contract, oracle, liquidity, or operational risk.
The architecture also documents a priority-request queue and an Escape Hatch. These are stressed-system protections, not a promise that routine withdrawals are always instant.
Standard versus Premium accounts
Lighter currently separates accounts into two models.
Standard Account
The current official fee page lists 0 maker and 0 taker trading fees for perpetual and spot markets on Standard accounts. Order placement and cancellation include additional latency, with the live parameters defined by Lighter.
Premium Account
Premium is opt-in. Maker-taker fees and latency can vary by LIT staking tier. Higher tiers may reduce both, but users also need to understand volume quotas, sub-account aggregation, and staking conditions.
It is therefore inaccurate to write that every Lighter account is permanently free. Identify the account type and verify the live tier before trading.
Zero trading fees still leave real costs
A Lighter perpetual trade can still include:
- spread and order-book slippage;
- partial fills and the opportunity cost of waiting;
- funding while the position remains open;
- Ethereum deposit, withdrawal, or related network costs;
- Premium-account fees or capital committed to LIT staking;
- position loss during liquidation.
Compare venues with the same size, direction, and holding period, not one fee-table cell.
How funding works
Lighter documentation says funding settles at each hour and is paid peer to peer between long and short traders, without an exchange charge on the funding transfer itself. Positive funding normally flows from longs to shorts; negative funding reverses the direction.
The rate changes with the relationship between mark and index prices. For a longer hold, review the current rate and estimate multiple settlement periods. Zero trading fees are not zero holding cost.
Orders and liquidity checks
Lighter provides an order-book experience, but low latency and verifiable matching do not guarantee a complete fill. Review:
- spread and real depth around the target price;
- order type, Reduce-Only, and time-in-force;
- placement and cancellation latency for the selected account type;
- mark price, index price, funding, and liquidation price;
- market depth during both normal and stressed conditions.
For a larger order, estimate the average fill across multiple price levels instead of reading only the best bid and ask.
Deposits, withdrawals, and account security
Lighter Core uses Ethereum as its anchoring layer. Before depositing, verify the source network, asset, and official contract interaction. Before withdrawing, confirm destination, cost, and processing status. Complete a small deposit and withdrawal cycle first.
Sequencer soft finality and proof-verified Ethereum state are different checkpoints. A fast interface response is not the same as final state verification.

It is a poor fit for anyone choosing solely because of a zero-fee headline, ignoring depth and liquidation, or treating points and staking as guaranteed returns.

- Verify live maker-taker fees and latency parameters.
- Review depth, funding, margin, and liquidation price.
